#13 HELL ON EARTH LESSON 5 PART 6

We are continuing to identify the different characters who will appear during the great tribulation. There will be no questions in this lesson but be sure to read the scriptures listed.

The one hundred and forty four thousand

The bible clearly teaches that the one hundred and forty four thousand are men from each of the twelve tribes of Israel who are born again and commissioned by God to go forth and preach the Gospel.

Revelation 7:4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed: 5 of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed; 6 of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed; 7 of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed; 8 of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed. 9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

A popular religious organization teaches that only 144,000 people will go to heaven. (Verse 9) in the above passage indicates that this teaching is false?

Revelation 14:1 (NLT) Then I saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together. 3 This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders. No one could learn this song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.4 They have kept themselves as pure as virgins, following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb.5 They have told no lies; they are without blame.

This is the last passage in which we see the 144,000. It offers a good description of their location (On Mount Zion with the Lamb Jesus Christ) their ministry and life style.

The role of the Holy Spirit during the tribulation

There are several schools of thought concerning the ministry of the Holy Spirit during the tribulation period. The first thing we must establish is the identity of the restrainer of (II Thessalonians 2:6-7). Sin and lawlessness of our day is nothing compared to the sin and ungodliness that will take place during the tribulation period. Who or what is restraining, to a degree, the evil and lawlessness in our world today? There are several opinions offered in an attempt to answer this question.

Some say it is the Roman Empire. This is impossible, seeing that the Roman Empire is presently non-existent, and the “restrainer’ has not yet been revealed.

Another idea is that the “restrainer” is Satan, but this is illogical because Satan would be the last person to restrain evil in the world (Mark 3:23).

Another suggestion is that human governments are restraining lawlessness in our world. But human governments will not cease to exist before the unveiling of the Antichrist. Many human governments are built upon sin and lawlessness.

The only person possessing sufficient power to do this kind of restraining is God the Holy Spirit. How does the Holy Spirit do this? Through the church, the body of Christ, Christians, whom He indwells, and through whom He works in our society to hold back the swelling tide of lawlessness. How will the Holy Spirit be taken out of the way? Contrary to what many believe, the Holy Spirit will not be taken out of the world when the church is taken back to heaven with Christ at the rapture because The Holy Spirit is omnipresent and thus could not leave the earth. Another reason the Holy Spirit can not be taken out of the world is because apart from the Holy Spirit no one can be saved (John 16:8). In (Revelation 7:9-14) we see countless conversions taking place during the tribulation. In (Joel 2:28-30) we see a prophecy that clearly describes events that will take place during the tribulation and that also shows that the Holy Spirit will be poured out during the tribulation period. So how will the Holy Spirit be taken out of the way? When the church leaves the earth at the rapture, the Holy Spirit will be taken out of the way in the sense that His unique ministry of restraining lawlessness will be removed. After the removal of the Holy Spirit’s restraining influence, the world will plunge into lawlessness and the man of sin will be revealed (II Thessalonians 2:6-7).

#12 HELL ON EARTH LESSON 5 PART 5

The beast

The next personality we will study who will make his appearance during the great tribulation will be “The Beast” (The anti-Christ). This character is referred to by several names and titles. Read the following passages of scripture and write the name that identifies the anti-Christ.

(1) (II Thessalonians 2:3) The man of sin.

(2) (II Thessalonians 2:3) The son of perdition.

(3) (II Thessalonians 2:8) The wicked one.

  1. (Daniel 11:36) The willful king.

(5) (Revelation 11:7) The beast.

  1. (Daniel 7:8) The little horn.
  2. (Zechariah 11:17) The idol shepherd.

The beast is the counterfeit Christ. Read (Revelation 13:2) and identify the person from whom the beast receives his power. Satan

What happens to the beast in (Revelation 13:14). He is wounded by a sword and lives.

What will be his fate in (Revelation 19:20) He will be cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

When will this take place? (Revelation 16:16). After the battle of Armageddon.

The second beast

This second beast is the False Prophet who arises after the beast is healed of a deadly wound. Read the following passage of scripture and answer the following questions concerning the second beast (The false prophet).

Revelation 13:11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,

17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is six hundred and sixty-six.

The 2nd beast spoke like a dragon. What do you think this means? He is inspired by Satan.

What does he cause everyone who dwells on the earth to do? To worship the beast.

What is one of the “great signs” he performs? He makes fire come down from heaven to the earth.

What does he tell those who dwell on the earth to make? To make an image of the beast.

What will be the fate of those who do not worship the image of the beast? They will be killed.

Who are the only ones who will be able to buy or sell? Those who have the mark, the name or the number of the beast.

What is the number of the beast? It is the number of a man…six hundred and sixty six.
